Plaintiff James Obergefell and John Arthur were in a same-sex relationship for over 20 years residing in Ohio. They wanted to get married, but same-sex marriage was illegal in Ohio. Because of this, the couple got married on a plane in Maryland which allowed their same-sex marriage. Arthur died, yet Ohio refused to list Obergefell on Arthur's death certificate. Because they were wed in Maryland, this was also a reason why Ohio refused, as they were not wed in their state.
