Question 51 of 51 Question 51 30 points Save Ar ? Transpo Freightliners Inc. (TFI) is a Canadian owned, North American transport company. Their prime equipment consists of "eighteen wheeler" tractor-trailer trucks used for inter-provincial, interstate and local hauls. The company is unionized and has about 500 employees, the majority of whom are on hourly wages. Most of the tractor-trailer trucks are two to five years old and are all leased. To get the best leasing price, TFI did not include air conditioning as criteria. It was felt that this luxury was not required and would keep fuel costs down. The leasing company presented TFI with a special rate on a major manufacturer's tractor-trailer truck that ultimately proved to be deficient. Controls are poorly placed, the driver's seat is very uncomfortable on long hauls, noise levels inside the cab are abnormally high, and drivers complain about fumes when the windows are open. Lower back complaints and headaches are frequent with drivers of these tractor-trailer trucks. Complaints from the workers are not taken seriously by management, and as a result, grievances have tripled in the past two years. Accidents, both on and off the road, which have always been high, are continuing to rise, resulting in an increase in accident insurance premiums. Additionally, TFI's WSIB claims have increased and are above the sector's average. The company has an Accident Review Board comprised of seven management persons. This board rates accidents as preventable or non-preventable. Preventable decisions usually result in disciplinary action such as time off without pay or in some cases dismissal. Most of the decisions from this board are rated as preventable. Morale is not good among drivers. Also, a recently obtained automotive industry contract is in jeopardy due to competition from the United States. TFI's poor "Just in Time" delivery record has not helped the situation. Hence, increased stress and uncertainty has been placed on the workers. In response to the problems in the case study, the organization has decided to hire you as an OHS consultant. Using your comprehensive knowledge from the course, you are required to identify and assess the health and safety hazards through a detailed discussion including health effects. Also, you must develop recommendations to reflect a higher priority and accountability to OHS and prioritize the recommendations according to 'The Principles of Control' (At the Source, Along the Path, and At the Worker Level).
