"To me, the issues being talked about in this discussion are rooted deep into our history. In order to learn to be accepting of everyone today, it is important to accept and more importantly acknowledge the history of our country. Yes, in this country there's an existing history of racial discrimination, sexism, ableism, etc. We know this. However, it is best if we can look at this terrible and embarrassing past and learn how to lead our lives in an exemplary manner that shows growth from where we have come from.
I believe a large part of discrimination comes from upbringing. Many parents continue to hold a 'traditional' mindset and set of core values that do not positively comment on acceptance of everyone. In my opinion, there is a way to teach these values in a classroom setting without bringing politics or anything relating to opinions into the picture. Treating people with the kindness you'd expect in return should not be an opinion, it must be a standard if we want to see any forward movement in this area.
Treat people with kindness. Treat people like people. It is so simple yet so cliche, but treat others as you want to be treated. It is a shame to see that many people continue to fail to uphold this standard of living, however, this means there is opportunity for us as the young and wise generation to set an example for everyone, including those that are to come in the future."
