Price Scanners

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has, for several years, studied the accuracy of price scanners used in many retail stores. Grocery stores were found, in general, to have a smaller incidence of scanner errors than non-grocery retail stores. The manager of a Richmond retailer (non-grocery) wishes to investigate scanner errors at his store. A random sample of 101 scanner transactions from last week's purchases is obtained, and the average transaction error is + $4.32 with a standard deviation of $1.52. In other words, the customers making these 101 transactions were over charged, on average, by amount $4.32

A. Use the sample data to calculate and interpret a 90% confidence interval for the mean transaction error in the population of scanner transactions that occurred at this store last week.

B. Determine the margin of error for the interval estimate in A, and explain what it represents about scanner errors.

Tyrone Griffin was born April 13, 1985, and is an American rap artist best known by his stage name Ty Dolla Sign. He signed to Atlantic Records in 2012 and released two albums (Beach House and Beach House 2) which featured collaborations with a number of established artists.

A. Of interest is to determine the mean age of all rap artists. It is conjectured that the mean age of all rap artists is 29 years, and of interest is to test this conjecture versus the alternative that the mean age of all rap artists is different from 29 years. State the appropriate null and alternative hypotheses that should be tested

B. Consider the information and hypotheses specified in question 6. A simple random sample of 41 rap artists was selected and the age of each was recorded. The mean age for this sample of 41 rap artists was 27.3 years, with a standard deviation of 3.6 years. The distribution of the data was slightly skewed to the right.
