The purpose of this assignment is to critique the film "The Breakfast Club" in terms of how realistic early adolescence is represented through each member of the Breakfast Club, as well as through any themes that run through the movie. Think about and relate the topics we have already covered (i.e., puberty, cognitive development, family relations, and moral reasoning) to the film. Specifically, discuss theories and concepts from the course and relate them directly to behavior displayed in the film.

You will need to watch the film, even if you have already seen it. You may, in fact, want to view the film a couple of times. The first time for pleasure, if you have not yet seen it, and to orient yourself to the individual characters; the second time to analyze it for the themes that relate to early adolescence.

If themes have been included that would not typically arise during early adolescence, feel free to discuss them as well. Consider the authenticity of the developmental period as represented by the film.

Analyze each adolescent in the film in terms of each of the following areas of development:

Puberty: Early, On-Time, Late Maturer and Psychosocial Consequences

Cognitive development: adolescent egocentricism; evidence for stage of development (Piaget), Gardner and Sternberg's theories, etc.

Family relations and issues: such as parent control styles and emotional autonomy, etc.

Identity Formation: the three general areas of identity formation are occupation, ideological, & interpersonal/relationship/emotional autonomy. The 4 identity statuses are achieved, moratorium, foreclosure, & diffusion. Discuss one area of identity formation in terms of exploration and commitment for each character.

Use information from the movie about the characters and their families, and provide a rationale for the characteristics chosen.
