You are a senior executive with a large company that manufactures mobile phones. About ten years ago your company opened a large plant in Waterloo, Ontario. The plant was built from scratch on vacant land on the outskirts of the city. As an incentive to locate in Waterloo, the City provided a property tax exemption for five years. The plant employs 5,000 people most of whom live and work in the local area. Waterloo was also an attractive location due to the presence of two universities and a college, which would provide a highly trained work force. It has recently been suggested that the company build and pay for a park and recreation complex estimated to cost $7 million. The corporation has become sufficiently profitable over the past ten years to be able to afford this, although dividends paid to shareholders will necessarily be reduced. You have been asked to provide arguments both for and against building and funding the park. Using both Friedman's ideas and the more modern view, discuss whether the company should build the park, from the point of view of social responsibility. (15 marks)
