This course examines the various federal, state, and local laws and regulations affecting health care delivery in the United States. It also covers public and private regulatory agencies, issues associated with professional malpractice, and business liability for health care products and services.

At the conclusion of the course, learners will be able to:

• Identify the legal rights that define relationships between private individuals, including property, contracts, and torts. (SLO3)
• Describe the role of the federal government in matters related to healthcare, particularly in the area of constitutional right to privacy. (SLO3)
• Summarize various state and federal government programs that regulate health care providers and payers. (SLO3)
• Define how fraud and abuse laws create a series of prohibitions on various healthcare and reimbursement arrangements and how some of these activities would not be considered illegal if they were practiced in non-healthcare organizations. (SLO3)
• Identify the elements of a medical malpractice case and the legal theories by which healthcare institutions may be held more liability for negligence than is typically associated with respondeat superior. (SLO3)
