The principle I would like to comment on is Integrity. What is integrity as stated in the American Institute of certified Accountants is an element of character fundamental to professional recognition. It is the quality from which the public trust derives and the benchmark against which a member must ultimately test all decisions. To me that means If you act with integrity, people will trust you, and know you will do the right thing. Also, you need to be willing to admit defeat when something doesn't work out. Being able to admit that you made a mistake and owning up that mistake and not letting others take the blame.

When you act with integrity you are giving a stronger reputation. In the accounting world reputation is everything. People come to a business because they trust you to do what right. If you act with integrity people will trust you and tell other people that you are trustworthy which will get you more clients. If a customer thinks your not trustworthy, they will tell people to not come to you because you can't be trusted.

An example is I worked for a tax service filing taxes for clients. A client came in with their taxes and want us to do their taxes. After going through their taxes something where missing that was needed to prepare them. When calling the client they stated that they didn't get the statement that was needed from the employer and just make up something that would work for them to use. The preparer told the client that she wasn't going to forge any documents for them and that they needed to come get their taxes and get someone else to do them. The client went on the ask if they paid her more than what she asked for would she just do it this one time. She told them they she wouldn't take any money from them, and they needed to come get their paperwork and go somewhere else. Well, after that they started telling people they this tax service wouldn't do their taxes and to not go to her. She had a lot of people come in and tell her that this client was telling people not to come to her because she wasn't reliable. She told this person she would go against her code of conduct just to please a client that wanted her to doctor papers just so they wouldn't owe the government money. This tax preparer could have taken the money from the client and not have said anything, but she had to keep up her integrity and not become involved in this corruption. She knew that her company had a reputation of going by the AICPA code of conduct and she was willing to do that after she had built her business.

If a customer comes into a tax office and asks you to make their taxes to where they want owe as much as they are suppose to owe they will send more business your way. The thing to do would be to tell they customer that they need to find another tax service because you want go against the rules of conduct just to get more clients.
