TOPIC: Autonomic computing

Autonomic computing refers to the development of computer systems that are capable of self-management. The topic was chosen because I work in the development of an autonomous capability. This improved computing capability will reduce the amount of time that IT professionals spend on system maintenance as computers systems will be able to perform preventative maintenance (such as software updates) and corrective maintenance (autonomous troubleshooting and fault correction) without human intervention. It also provides for a significant reduction in the total cost of ownership (TCO) as there is reduced downtime, reduced maintenance costs, and fewer personnel required to maintain a system. There are four characteristics that autonomic IT systems should possess:

1. Self configuration: The system must perform automatic configuration of new components and allow them to join the system based on pre-defined policies or rules.

2. Self optimization: The system must look for ways to improve its performance based on defined parameters.

3. Self healing: The system must detect errors and take the required actions to resolve for continued operation.

4. Self protection: The system has a self-defense mechanism against possible attacks and against the impact of the errors that cannot be handled by the self-healing mechanism (Sari,et.al., 2021).

The concept of Autonomic systems was inspired by the human nervous system. The body's nervous system is able to react to external stimuli without conscious intervention. Changes in breathing rates, internal body temperature, and hormonal secretion all occur in response to environmental changes. In the case of computer systems, there are substantial benefits to having a system that has the awareness to adapt to a changing environment. There are three characteristics that autonomous computer systems should have. These are awareness, automation, and adaptivity (Banafa, 2016).

There are two basic models for autonomic computer design: a feedback control system and a multi-agent system. In a feedback control system, changing conditions provide feedback to the system that triggers changes in the system's function. A multi-agent system uses the collective functions of separate components to complete higher-order functions. For instance, groups of computers can be networked such that by performing individual functions, the components can collectively manage the system's functions and resources with reduced need for outside input (Issitt, 2018). There are several fields where autonomic systems have already been implemented with high success rates. In Big data, autonomic computing based intrusion detection is used to improve security and protect against data breaches.

IBM has multiple initiatives where where autonomic properties are either integrated with existing software or being developed as new software to work with existing systems (Dehraj & Sharma, 2021). Smart energy grids are often used that can adjust to fluctuations in power. There are also several avenues of opportunity for the incorporation of autonomous capabilities in the Internet of Things (IOT).

Some of the disadvantages of autonomic computing are dependency on IP connectivity, and the potential for errors to go undetected due to the autonomous nature of the system and complexity of the programming. In the business case of Jumbo Carpets autonomic cloud resources could improve the cybersecurity and stability of company data in storage.

The carpet industry as a whole is not IT driven and the implications of the adoption of this technology may not be as profound to a small business. Some questions for consideration:

Would the benefits of adoption of an autonomic computer network by a small business such as Jumbo Carpets outweigh the potential cost?

What practical applications exist for this technology in an industry such as the carpet industry?

How does this evolution in IT combine with cloud computing and IOT for an improved user experience?
