TOPIC- Quantum computers and the underlying emerging field of quantum computing.

A quantum computer uses the quantum states to perform calculations. Quantum states refer to a theoretical entity that provides all possible measurements of an outcome at the same time (Illinois Quantum Information Science & Technology Center, n.d.). These measurements allow complex problems that are unable to be to be resolved with modern technicians to be placed in a multidimensional computational space (IBM, n.d.). You can think of modern computation uses a graph with two axis (0 and 1) to resolve problems, while quantum computer use a graph with a third axis to establish new variable relationships.

This new computation technique allows quantum computers to complete complex tasks much faster than traditional computers. Traditional computers receive variables and find relationships build on a two-dimensional graph. If there are too many variables or if there are too many relationships, traditional computers will be overwhelmed with tracking all the needed changes in memory. If there are unknown variables that cannot be found through mathematical equations, traditional computers will attempt to find a solution using brute force, needing an exceptional number of resources (memory) to complete. Quantum computers utilize the third axis to establish subtle relationships to provide faster resolution times. For example, to receive the same number of information, you will need 6 squares to receive complete information on a cube. If the shape is exceeding complex, you will need insight on each unique surface area and the relationship between them to perform calculations. If you were able to work with the shape in third axis, you can find relationships faster by rotating the shape it to learn about it.

This field will enable computers to perform calculations that are closer to the observable world. This is enables new technologies and concepts to form around new theoretical concepts, similar to how computation enabled technology changes in the past. An immediate effect to the current world is the change in cyber security, with particular concerns on encryption. Introducing a third computation space will provide a faster method to decrypt the complex mathematical processes done to binary to protect data (Tung, 2022).

  • Which field is slated to be affected more negatively than positively with the introduction of quantum computers? What concepts are you using to determine negativity?
  • Is it ethical from a societal perspective to introduce and utilize technology that has the potential to upheave all preconceived and accepted practices (overwhelming power for certain individuals)?
  • What is the single best change and single worst change quantum computers are slated to do to today's society?
