Please comment on this statement:
Putting your employees first is servant leadership, a style of leadership I attempt to maintain within my areas of responsibility based on my years of experience in the military. Contrary to the perception of a hierarchical leadership structure in the military, all leaders must prioritize the mission and their subordinates. When I meet with my junior leaders to outline role expectations, I regularly state, "Take care of your people, and I will have the time to take care of you. Ignore your people and focus on yourself, and I will direct my attention to their needs." As a restaurant owner and operator, I placed significant importance on the needs of the staff and supported them. I had a situation where a customer was mistreating a server, and when I attempted to defuse the situation, the customer loudly advised me that they paid the bills and wanted the staff member fired. I walked over to the register, pulled out their refund, walked back to the table, slapped down the refund, and proclaimed that they did not pay the bills but paid for service and that in my restaurant, you will respect the staff or get out. The customer left, and to my surprise, many customers applauded. In putting my staff first, I gained the respect of the customers and the community.
