Measuring Pressure: The most challenging part of this project is to measure the pressure in the thermometer. The easiest way to do this is to make a U-tube manometer. In this situation, the water levels in the U-tube are different. The water is higher on the atmospheric pressure side of the tube, therefore the pressure inside the ask must be higher than atmospheric pressure. The equation for pressure is given by: P = Pa + pgh Pa is atmospheric pressure. I p is density of the uid (water in this case make certain to use the correct units). 9 is the gravitational eld constant (9.8 kag). And It is the difference in water height. Suppose you wanted to keep the volume constant. Then you would always want the water level to be the same on the ask side of the tube. You would add or remove water from the open end of the tube to keep the water level the same. On the other hand, if you wished to keep the pressure constant then you have to have the same difference in water level all the time. Temperatures we know are things like boiling water, ice water, body temperature. We can mix ice water with boiling water to get temperatures between the two. You can gure out the mixture temperatures. Let me point out that if you put the ask in boiling water, the uid in the Utube will simply squirt out. Think about how much air expands when you change the temperature from 20 C to 100 C treat it as an ideal gas. 4 In preparation for making your gas thermometer to measure absolute zero, consider the two sets of bar charts for processes involving ideal gases. These charts show initial and nal values for the three primary state variables. The rst is an isobaric process. The second is an isochoric process. Complete both the Pressure vs. Volume graph and the Volume or Pressure vs. Temperature graph. Think about what the intercept in each of these circumstances would be. Temperature Pressure Volume gs asgs . V I F I F I F V T Temperature Pressure Volume gs %s% . . I F I F I F V T Question to ask yourself for building the gas thermometer: 1) How can I calibrate the thermometer with as many points as possible? You may not use a thermometer to calibrate your thermometer. You know that boiling water is 100C and you can get water to DC with ice. Consider combinations of ice water and boiling water. 2) How do I nd absolute zero from these measurements? Note: you will not have a \"calibrated\" thermometer to compare with. However, you can come up with ways to use certain substances, or mixtures to act as known temperatures. These temperatures should be in Celsius and we will nd absolute zero in the Celsius scale
