[Case study scenario]

Bell Shore Industries is dedicated to providing the greatest level of service and quality in all of its goods and services. It is our responsibility to meet the specified quality and accuracy criteria and expectations.

Some information has been established that will be critical to consider in order to carry out the job as efficiently as feasible.

If 60 cabinets are not installed before the end of the six months, BSI will be fined 7% of the total contract price every week.

BSI's finance department believes BSI will make a profit of approximately $5000.00 per unit based on the cost breakdown as follows: BSI Human resources and manufacturing, assembly and dispatch costs - $3000.00 per unit Freight cost - $200.00 per unit Insta'sllation cost - $500.00 per unit.

In addition, the deadlines for each of the project's processes have been established.

40 dwellings have already been built and are awaiting installation. 15 homes are 75 percent to be done. It will take 5 weeks to accomplish them completely. Five houses are yet to be built, but they will begin within the next week. A house takes 5 months to construct. Four cabinets require five working days to fully produce and assemble. One working day is required for freight between Sydney, where the manufacturing department is based, and Brisbane, where the housing complex is located. Each cabinet takes one working day to fully instal.

All of the preceding must be taken into account in order to meet everyone's expectations and avoid future annoyances and penalties.

You will ensure that this project is done within the required timeframe requested and to the level required under Australian Standards and the Building Standards Authority Queensland. You have been given a schedule of 6 months from today's date to done this project, and you are concerned that this schedule may be delayed as recent floods affecting Queensland have slowed construction on some of the houses that have not yet been done. You have been assured by James Freeman, the project manager overseeing the structure of the complex, that the homes will be done two weeks before your completion date. He feels that this will give you enough time to be done all installations. Forty of the homes have already been done and are ready for installation. Fifteen homes are 75% satisfied, and five are still yet to be constructed but will start within the week. Each place takes approximately five months to be done. A clause in the contract identifies that BSI will be penalised 7% of the total contract price per week until the project is done, should you exceed the agreed contract closing date. You will need to ensure that the organisation and structure of the project align with group and individual skills for the project tasks. You will also need to liaise with Al Perez and Len Shapiro from BSI's Manufacturing department to ensure that the cabinets are made on time. This will include acquiring any staff and resources necessary, allocating personnel to the project, and defining clear project role descriptions. It currently takes five working days to fully manufacture and assemble four cabinets with the resources that are now available. Once dispatched, the freight time between Sydney and Melbourne is one working day. Current Scenario Queensland is presently experiencing bad weather conditions. Weather forecasts predict that the heavy rains and strong winds will continue for up to four days. There have already been reported flooding around the construction area. Based on the feedback you have gathered from the residents of surrounding towns, it usually takes at least a day for the floods to subside, provided the rain completely stops. The Queensland floods have not only slowed the housing construction but also limited the number of installation staff available due to the roads being inaccessible from their residence. Flooding in some houses up to a foot high has dramatically impacted the installation of base cabinets.
