Describe opponents strengths weaknesses, your strategies and competitive advantage in this negotiation.
You are the project manager of the Government Services Group at New Westminster Computing, a technology consulting firm that creates custom accounting software solutions for businesses, local governments, and retail banks. The COO of New Westminster Computing has asked the engineers in Government Services to merge with the engineers in Business Services. This newly created Web Services Group will be responsible for driving growth in the company. You will meet with the project manager of the Business Services Group to negotiate the details of the merger. You have identified four issues that you want to discuss during the negotiation: overall leadership plan, engineer redundancy plan, team leadership plan, and transition time. Your negotiation is not complete until you reach an agreement on all four of these issues. As part of your negotiation preparation, you ranked the issues in terms of their relative importance. Your goal is to reach an agreement where you reach the desired terms on your most important issues. However, you should not feel limited by the list of issues described below. Feel free to add issues to the negotiation if they will help you create a better deal. The most important issue in this negotiation is the team leadership plan. The new Web Services Group requires four team leaders. You would like the members of the Government Services Group to be the leaders for all four of the teams. It is critical that you get a team leadership plan of 0 leaders from Business Services, 4 from Government. The next most important issue is the transition time. The transition time is the number of months before the two teams are merged. You would like to transition your team to the web services group as quickly as possible. You would like a transition time of 3 months. The engineer redundancy plan is slightly less important. Four engineers will have to be moved to Legacy Services following the merger. You would like to remove the four government services engineers who do not fit the collectivistic culture of your group. You strongly believe you should get an engineer redundancy plan of 0 engineers removed from Business Services, 4 from Government. The overall leadership plan is important to you, but not critically so. The only two choices for overall leadership of the Web Services group are to promote you or your counterpart in this negotiation. You would like to be the leader of the Web Services Group. Should you and the other project manager fail to reach an agreement, the COO will create the new Web Services Group by merging the Business Services and Financial Services groups. The engineers in Government Services will then be transitioned into Legacy Services. You and the COO have had some preliminary discussions about the potential transition into Legacy Services. The COO offered you an okay deal. You plan to pursue this opportunity unless you are able to get most of what you want in your upcoming negotiation.
