When citing information from the textbook use the following format: (Berk, p. 17) or (Lecture, Date

Introduction paragraph (5 points): Provide a brief paragraph (2-3 sentences) about the child and environment you observed.

Physical Development (10 points): of the child you observed. Describe exactly what the child was physically doing. What small muscle skills and/or large muscle skills did the child use? How active was the child? Describe physical developmental principles you observed. Apply at least one theory and stage of physical development (Erikson works great here). Must have at least 2 references to textbook or PowerPoints (4 of the 10 points).

Language Development (10 points): Include examples of the child's verbalizations. How did the child communicate? How does this relate to expectations for this age? What nonverbal communication skills did the child use? Apply either the nativist perspective or the interactionist perspective of language development for this section. Must have at least 2 references to textbook or PowerPoints (4 of the10 points).

Social Interactions (10 points): Who did the child interact with? Was the child an onlooker, unoccupied, or involved in cooperative play? Describe characteristics of the child's interactions that indicate unique development (e.g., leader/follower, cooperative/competitive.) What levels of play (symbolic, games, constructive, parallel, cooperative, etc.) are reflected in these activities? Relate this child's behavior to what you have learned about social development and play in class. Apply at least one theory. Must have at least 2 references to textbook or PowerPoints (4 of the10 points).

Cognitive Development (10 points): Describe the child's cognitive abilities you observed (e.g., problem solving, curiosity, knowledge of basic skills, memory, any other cognitive skills)? How did these abilities compare to expectations for this age? Apply Piaget's Theory of Cognitive Development in this section. Must have at least 2 references to textbook or PowerPoints (4 of the10 points).

Emotional Development (10 points): Describe the emotions you believe were expressed by the child. Emotions that might be evident are the following: fear, boredom, sadness, anger, distress, jealousy, excitement, delight, joy, elation, affection. For three of the emotions you observed, describe the situation in which it occurred and describe how the emotion was communicated (i.e., facial expression, body movement, verbal, etc.) Must have at least 2 references to textbook or PowerPoints (4 of the10 points).

Conclusion (10 points): When we are observing, our own underlying assumptions (beliefs, attitudes, past experiences, family background, race, ethnicity, etc.) tend to influence our observations and interpretations of people and events. Discuss your underlying assumptions about children, your expectations, your background, your beliefs and attitudes and how those influenced your observations of the child. Summarize your observation by discussing what you learned about children and human development from your observation. Comment on your overall reaction to this observation assignment.
