What is the probability of rolling a die ten times and obtaining odd digits on eight of the rolls?
What is the probability of rolling a die ten times and obtaining odd digits on eight or fewer of the rolls?
Use Microsoft Excel to solve the problem and give your excel output.
Instructions:
We know that this process can be modeled by a binomial distribution since the ten rolls of a die are identical, independent trials.
In the context of this scenario, each roll has two possible outcomes: an odd number or an even number. Let X = the number of odd digits obtained in ten rolls of a die.
We see for this problem that there are ten trials (n = 10) and exactly eight successes (x = 8), since we consider rolling an odd digit to be a success. Three of the six numbers on the die are odd, so the probability of rolling an odd digit for any one roll is 3/6=1/2=0.5
Thus p = 0.5. We have the three values we need, so we are now ready to find the probability using Excel.
To compute the probability for exactly x successes after n trials, when the probability of success is p, use
=BINOM.DIST(x,n,p,FALSE)
Steps:
Put X,n and p in column A and values on column B. Select B4.
Click on fx on the ribbon and insert function dialogue box will appear. Select Statistical then select BINOM.DIST. Click OK. Function Argument box will appear.
Put values in the Function Argument box. Click OK
Click OK
