Apparent weight. We often say that a bathroom scale measures weight. the force of gravity pulling us to the Earth. But that's not quite accurate. They measure the normal force pushing against them, as demonstrated by picking it up and pressing it against a wall. When we stand on a scale, it tells us our apparent weight, how heavy an object appears to be. (a) Explain in a few sentences what a scale would read if you stand on it while in an elevator that is accelerating up, moving up at a constant speed, and slowing down. Explain why that happens using your knowledge of forces. (1)) Explain in a few sentences what a scale would read if you stand on it while skydiving. (e) In the future you may be a scientist or engineer on a space station orbiting the Moon. Your job is to measure the mass of Moon rocks, but a bathroom scale won't work. You have a box full of springs with different known spring constants. Devise an experiment to measure mass. Be specic: when it comes to what you actually measure and how you measure it
