Monica Smith 1. Monica Smith and her ex-husband James were legally divorced on March 1, 2019. As of the end of the year, Monica was unmarried. Monica and James had only one child, an 11 year old girl named Sophia. As part of the divorce decree, Monica was given custody of Sophia and James was required to pay 1) child support for Sophia's care, and 2) alimony to Monica until she remarries or dies. Because James will be making child support payments, the divorce decree provided that James will be permitted to claim Sophia as a tax dependent until Sophia no longer qualifies as a tax dependent of either parent and the decree obligates Monica to sign and/or file any required forms to cause this result to occur. 2. Monica rents a home (separate from James) that she pays for herself. Sophia lives with Monica most of the time but she visits and stays with her father every other weekend and most holidays. During the year, Sophia stayed at James's house a total of 74 nights. 3.
