3. A mixture containing 1.0 mol of HI, 0.50 mol of I2, and 0.1 mol of H2 is prepared in a variable volume reactor and heated to 150 C. The total pressure was fixed at 4.0 bar. The equilibrium constant is 207 at this temperature for the reaction H2 + 12 + 2 HI a) Calculate the equilibrium composition in the reactor assuming this is the only process that takes place. Give your answer in terms of both the moles of each component and the partial pressures of each species. b) Now we need to consider the possibility that 12 may condense under these conditions. At 150 C, the vapor pressure of liquid I2 is 0.392 bar. Consider whether the partial pressure of I2 you determined in part a) is high enough to lead to condensation. c) If your answer to part b) is yes, consider the following process: 12 (1) 12 (g, 0.392 bar) Redo the calculation in part a) assuming that some amount of liquid is present. Determine the number of moles of each species present at equilibrium in all phases. (Hint: can the partial pressure of 12 (g) vary in the presence of 12 (1)?)
