3) Water is pumped from a reservoir to a packed tower at a volumetric flow rate of 0.02m3/s. Water enters the packed tower from the bottom and exits from the top as given in the figure and the top of the tower is open to the atmosphere. The pipeline consists of 50m of 3 -inch schedule 40 commercial steel pipe, which includes 90 elbows and two fully open gate valves. The diameter and the height of the packing in the tower are 0.8m and 3m, respectively. The packing material consists of spherical ceramics material with a diameter of 2.0cm and a specific gravity of 2.5 . The void fraction of the packed bed is 0.4 . a) Determine the pressure drop in the packed bed. b) Calculate the total friction loss between point " 1 " to point " 2 ". water=998kg/m3water=1103kg/m.s
