You have been employed as a chemical engineer in a plant. Your first job is to do some design calculation for distillation with packed column. An existing packed column has the following properties shown in Table 3. The distillation column will be used to purify a feed stream containing methanol and water by using packed column. The feed stream contains 40mol% of methanol. It is intended to reduce water contains to 0.002 mole fraction in the distillate product. a. Structured packings work very well in vacuum and atmospheric pressure distillation columns, but sometimes structured packings do not work well in high-pressure columns. What is different about high-pressure columns that may make the structured packings not work as well? b. Determine the diameter of the column based on conditions at the bottom product and operating at a vapor flow rate with 70% of flooding. c. How many transfer units are required for the packed column? d. Calculate the column height if a trayed column is used instead of packed column. (Assumption: the plate efficiency is 70%, plate spacing is 18 in and =0.85 ) e. As the engineer who responsible for designing the distillation tower, which type of column are you going to choose in your design and how do you convince your company to agree with your decision
