Inspiration I drive by many businesses and often see this sign posted on the building, "Beware of guard dog". This can certainly be a deterrent for any thieves. But think about the hassles with regards to having a guard dog. You have to buy a dog (the meanest ugliest dog that you can find), provide it with veterinary services, food, water, etc. Oh, and let's not forget the dog crap around the yard that needs to be collected. You could upgrade to something that is more secure; you could hire a full-time security guard or a full staff of guards... that could get extremely expensive. Neither of these solutions appear inexpensive, or effective!! Hey... What about the use drones! Why can't we use drones to take the place of a guard dog, and let it roam the yard looking for security breaches? Won't those thieves be surprised when they hear that familiar sound of a vicious dog barking from behind the fence; little do they know that it is a drone generating the growling and barking sounds. Should the thief try to jump over the fence the drone will call 911 and start video surveillance; they will track the intruder's every movement. The drone won't stop the pursuit until it hears... you're under arrest ... bad guy'. Think of it... you don't need to buy a dog, feed it, walk it, pick up its (stuff in a plastic bag) from all over the yard, etc. Why stop there... why can't you start a security business that eliminates the need for security guards of all types; a business focused on the use of drones. Our new company will be known as DroneOnGuard (aka DOG)! Background Information DroneOnGuard will specialize in supplying drones that patrol a workplace or event to minimize crimes and thefts of all types and to bring those responsible for crime to justice. We offer a wide range of drones (over 200 different types of drones), from a simple one drone solution, to something more radical; an entire swarm of drones (working collaboratively) to identify breaches of security, gather evidence, and chase down the intruders until they give up. (Dude, you do not want to be chased down a dark alley by a couple of hundred angry drones...oh I think not!) Fortunately... We purchased the drone security software from a small company in Paris, Ontario. We have sourced a healthy supply of inexpensive drones made by a company in Ontario. To reiterate... we do not manufacture the drones - only purchase the drones from the manufacturer The company that manufactures the drones is responsible for the following: o Installs and configure the software They ship the completed drones in individual packages; one drone per box. Boxes them in a small box of 6"x6"x12" dimensions. DroneOnGuard is responsible for the following: o Customers place orders using our mobile application and we accept payment from the customer. Each customer order is carefully picked, packaged and shipped to the customer from our fulfilment centre using Canada Post. Customers are able to track their shipments through the mobile app. You need to plan and design a fulfilment centre that will be used to house, package and ship drones to our customers worldwide. This will consist of a single warehouse located somewhere in London, Ontario. Please read the assumptions section of the document prior to starting the project. Drone Security Questions and Activities for Part 1 Answer questions below and include in the written summary: 1. Floor Plan. Using Visio design/draw a floor plan for your retail distribution/product fulfilment centre. a. The physical facility must incorporate the logical flow of orders throughout the fulfilment process; beginning when an order is received, to shipping the order out the door to the customer. b. Provide adequate space to store product inventory. c. Keep in mind that you will require space for warehouse workers and their daily activities, as well as administrative people and their work, etc. d. Include the Technology as outlined in your technology plan in the floor plan diagram. 2. Sales - How many drones will we sell in the first year of operations, assuming that we start shipping on January 1? a. We want to know the number of drones that will be sold, not the number of orders sold. b. This facility is going to open on January 1st of next year. This plant (facility) needs to support the company for the next 3 years c. When calculating your totals, please round your calculations to the nearest number of orders on a monthly basis. d. We are currently processing 75 orders per day but the business is growing at 5% per month on average. For example, in January we expect 75 orders and in February we expect to average 79 orders per day (rounded up to the nearest number of orders). e. We expect this same pattern of growth for many years to come as drones become more popular. f. We are open and processing orders (from 8:00am until 5:00pm - with a 1 hour lunch break), seven days a week. With one exception: we never work February 29th; we give the employees that day off - we believe that it is "bad luck to work on February 29th during a leap year. g. Please show your calculations to demonstrate how you arrived at the correct answer. 3. Information Technology Plan. Build an information technology/automation plan for the facility. a. Build a technology/automation plan for the facility. Technology should be used in a very effective manner in an effort to reduce our overall costs. Technology includes both hardware and software but you do not have to include office furnishings, fork lift trucks, garbage cans, hard hats, etc. b. Create a Microsoft Word table in your document that will be used to summarize a list of all of the hardware and software needed to support the process and workers in the fulfilment center. You are required to include the following items: Hardware - research to identify all the hardware/equipment that will be needed to run this operation Identify the manufacturer name, the model number, quantity and cost of each piece of hardware. Software - research to find and identify all the software that will be needed to run this operation in a highly effective manner. List specific names of all Products/Software programs needed for this business. Estimate the cost of the software based on the number of users Include how many licenses you will need Include a one or two sentence description of each software program or product that explains its purpose. a. Provide the explanation in a row directly beneath the software details. Total cost of Information Technology - how much will all this cost? Calculate all the costs to acquire the hardware, software and other technical components needed for this business. At the end of the table, show subtotals for the 2 sections as well as the grand total of all technology costs. 4. Drone Security at our Fulfilment Centre - our drone solution is so secure and cost-effective that we plan on using them to secure our own facility! This section should not be included in your technical plan - this is a separate item. Calculate and answer the following questions: a. How many drones will we require to secure our facility for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week? Assume that 4 drones must be in the air at any given time to adequately secure our building b. How much will it cost us to use drones in our plant for the first year of operation? c. Assume in your calculation that 1 of the drones that we use for internal security will be damaged or fail each month and need to be replaced. Assume that a drone will fail within the fist month of operation. d. It costs us $1,020 per drone (this drone usually retails for $1,450). 5. Staffing a. Fill out the following table as it relates to staffing: Role Quantity Annual Cost Extended per Employee Cost Receptionist $28,000 Plant Manager $134,000 Shift Supervisor $86,000 Warehouse Workers $38,000 Technology Support $76,000 Do not include staff for drone software development. We do however provide technical service for internal users. Total cost for 1 year Assumptions: Customers will place orders for drones via the web or by using our mobile phone app; the mobile app runs natively on Android, Apple and Microsoft smart phones. We do not manufacture any of the drones. The company that manufacturers the drones provides warranty work. Drone Capabilities and Statistics Each individual drone package is 6"x6"x12" inch dimensions Average size of a purchase order is 4 drones o Drones can run for 4 hours on a single charge and then automatically return to its base for recharging; recharging takes 4 hours. o Most popular product: The DogDrone Barks and growls like a real dog . No feeding, walking, no cleanup hassles User can choose barking sound of their choice when configuring them for use . Most popular dog sounds: German Shephard Pitbull And the most feared Chihuahua! Drone Inventory: Our software is already loaded onto the drones and the drones are packaged in small boxes that are of a consistent size; the boxes are 6"x6"x12" in dimensions. An average drone has a retail selling price of $1,450.00 o There are 200 different types of drones offered through our online store. We never want to be out of stock. Instructions for submission Written Report o Create a written document in Microsoft Word (.docx) that includes all the questions, with corresponding answers beneath them. Be sure to answer each question. Include a title page with the names of all the team members Include Titles/Section names and question numbers for each of the 5 parts of the document; for example, Floor Plan, Sales, Technology Plan, etc. Please format and present your submission as a professional-looking business document. For example, section titles should be bolded. Insert your floor plan (Visio) diagram in your document. If the floor plan is not included in the body of the Word document it will not be marked. Because your submission is a business document, it will be in portrait orientation throughout, except for the floor plan. To change the orientation Create a section break in Microsoft Word for the floor plan and change the page orientation to landscape just for the sections that require landscape. There is a video online that demonstrates how to copy change the page orientation in one section of a document and include external images or spreadsheets. Include in-text citations and a reference page in APA format Use APA format to provide in-text citations . Include a reference page in APA format o Only 1 student will submit the project to the dropbox on FOL. Visio Diagram You need to upload a copy of your floor plan Visio digram(.vsdx) to the appropriate dropbox on FOL Even though you included a copy of your diagram in the Word document, you must still upload a copy of the visio file into a separate dropbox. DO NOT COMPRESS THE FILE IN ANY WAY PRIOR TO SUBMISSION TO FOL . Any student that disregards this instruction will have their project returned and it will not be marked until submitted in the correct format. Note that late submittals will have 10% deducted per day. . Inspiration I drive by many businesses and often see this sign posted on the building, "Beware of guard dog".
