Rise of Artificial Intelligence I chose to research the rise of artificial intelligence for my final paper. I chose this because I have noticed the increased use of artificial intelligence in all types of industries around me, and I wanted to do further research to examine both the benefits and implications of this technology. This research is important because artificial intelligence has been progressing rapidly, and its uses have been spreading to almost every sector of society, so it should be analyzed to examine the potential issues that may arise from this rapid growth. Thesis Statement While the beneficial uses and applications for artificial intelligence continue to expand, special care should be taken to fully analyze the impact and implications these programs have on the sectors they are applied in. Increased examinations of artificial intelligence programs as well as program developer diversification, should take place to ensure they are not biased or harmful to society. Impact on a Specific Population Artificial intelligence has the most prominent impact on the lower- and middle-class population. This is because there are industries in which artificial intelligence is applied where the presence of bias and prejudice seeps through to the artificial intelligence. One major example of this is the use of artificial intelligence in predictive policing algorithms, in which data inputs that are selective and biased can exacerbate racial issues in law enforcement (Hao, 2020). Surprising Data The statistical data I found relating to the use of artificial intelligence in the healthcare system was that "asthmatic children with lower SES (socioeconomic status) had larger BER (balanced error rate) than those with higher SES and had a higher proportion of missing information relevant to asthma care which was 41% vs. 24% for missing asthma severity and 12% vs. 9.8% for undiagnosed asthma despite meeting asthma criteria (Juhn et al., 2022, p. 1142). This shows that artificial intelligence displays bias in the healthcare system leading to people with lower socioeconomic status being misdiagnosed and mistreated by their healthcare providers.

Since climate change affects everyone, additional research is required. Related factors linked to climate change include alterations in weather patterns, increasing temperatures, the melting of glaciers, elevated ocean levels, and heightened instances of severe weather events like hurricanes and strong typhoons (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, 2021). The effects of climate change include human health, our food supply, animals, and their habitats are also threatened. For future generations to thrive, learning to mitigate the effects of climate change is crucial to our health and the environment to ensure a sustainable future.

Due to global warming, natural occurrences and human activities will continue negatively affecting our climate. Climate change is associated with several threats, including the risk of biodiversity loss, extinction, more extreme catastrophic weather events, higher temperatures, and rising sea levels (Kjellstrom & McMichael, 2013). Also, implementing renewable energy sources like wind and solar power could help reduce the human impact on the environment and climate change. This action would allow future generations to continue their existence on Earth.

Climate change affects everyone, but it is particularly concerning for the elderly. Elevated temperatures could severely impact those lacking access to air conditioning. During severe weather events like hurricanes or typhoons, elderly adults are more vulnerable because they might struggle to move quickly or find shelter. Air quality and pollutants also severely affect them, causing difficulty breathing (Frumkin et al., 2012)

The scholarly source I selected examines Climate change and its effect on coral reefs. Marine scientists have discovered a devastating decline in the growth of coral reefs due to the warming and acidification of the oceans (Weston, 2000). Studies that started in 1958 show an increase in the concentration of carbon dioxide that stems from the increasing use of fossil fuels as an energy source (Weston, 2000). What does this imply for humanity? Climate change-induced heat waves eventually starve the coral reefs, affecting marine life that depends on coral reefs for sustenance. This will all lead to fish species losing their habitats and fisheries collapsing, resulting in a food shortage and economic damage. (Weston, 2000).
