1. ADEM (Alabama Department of Environmental Management) requires that the average level of dissolved oxygen (DO) in 10 water samples taken below the outfall of a paper mill be 5.0 ppm or more.

If the mean is significantly less than 5.0, the mill is out of compliance (i.e. it's releasing more oxygen-consuming organic effluent than the river can assimilate; not good!).
