Please help for better understanding

In 1997, Billy Joe executed a valid will giving his entire estate to charity. The will provides nothing for a potential wife or children. Eight years after executing the will, Billy Joe meets a nice lady named Darlene and gets married. In a freak accident on a cold winter's night, Billy Joe's car slips off the road and he is killed. His only surviving family is his wife. At the reading of the will, it is announced that Billy Joe's entire estate has been left to charity.
