Cameron Mitchell: From High School Dropout to Founder and CEO Cameron Mitchell is the founder and owner of Cameron Mitchell Restaurants, which owns and operates well-known restaurants such as Ocean Prime and Hudson 29. Today, his company, which remains a privately held organization, has approximately 4,500 employees, generates "$300 million in annual revenue and operates 57 restaurants from coast to coast"1. Cameron Mitchell was a troubled youth whose parents' divorce, which happened when he was 9 years old, impacted him significantly. Mitchell started drinking and taking drugs at an early age and eventually started dealing drugs in high school. At the of age 16, he left home to live with friends for a few months and, up on returning home, he started thinking about suicide. He returned to high school and started working two jobs but felt that he had no sense of direction or purpose and eventually dropped out. At age 19, still working two jobs, and a high school dropout, he experienced what he calls an "epiphany". He says: "It was a busy Friday afternoon with pandemonium in the kitchen. Staff was changing from the morning to evening shift...It was as if time froze. I thought, I love this. I love being in a restaurant. That night, he wrote his career goals: "executive chef by age 23, general manager of a restaurant by 24, vice president of operations by 30" To achieve his goals, Mitchell's first step was to get into culinary school. To that purpose, he enrolled in summer classes to attain his high school diploma to then apply to culinary school. However, due to his low grades (he had a GPA of 1.05), his application was rejected. This only made him more motivated. To improve his grades, he enrolled in community college classes and was eventually accepted into culinary school. Since then, he has achieved all his career goals. Mitchell's success is based on the "people first philosophy that is grounded on his famous phrase, "Yes is the answer, what is the question?" As stated on the company's website" If you ask Cameron, the spark for such growth and success is the "people first" culture and philosophy that's deeply embedded in every level of Cameron Mitchell Restaurants. The company doesn't just hire great people, it also treats them great. This inspires Cameron Mitchell associates to radiate genuine hospitality that guests, vendors, and the community at large can feel and appreciate.
