Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • In addition to data about the state, you can find data about individual counties. Go to the Guilford County Health Department website: www.myguilford.com/humanservices/health/ In the menu on the left, select Health Statistics and scroll down to the 2011-2012 Guilford County Youth Risk Behavior Survey Results
  • Weve actually been using data from the 2011 Guilford County YRBS throughout the semester. To find out more information, click on the link to obtain a copy of the 2011 Guilford County YRBS report and use information in the report to answer the following questions.
  • You will also need to download a copy of the Excel data file to run a few analyses on your own.

  1. Write a research question that can be answered using a chi-square test from data in the YRBS dataset (it could be either the middle school or high school dataset both are posted under the course materials in Canvas). Then, use the data from the YRBS to answer your research question. Remember that a research question is phrased as a question and it is different than the survey questions. Also: You should come up with your own unique research question for this example (you should not have the same research question as a study partner).

  1. Your research question (1 pt): >>

  1. Identify the variables and types (2 pts)

Explanatory variable: >> Type: >>

Response variable: >> Type: >>

  1. Use the data posted on Canvas (under course materials) to create a pivot table to answer your research question. Make sure to put the explanatory variable in the columns and the response variable in the rows. Then request to show % with columns (if you are using the google version of Excel, you will need to compute the percentages yourself). Provide the table with your results (showing the percentages) below. Also make sure that you include the appropriate labels for the values, which you can obtain from the surveys (4 pts)

>>

  1. Create an appropriate chart to illustrate your results. You could use a stacked column chart or a regular column chart (your choice). Make sure that your chart has the following (5 pts):
    • an informative title (someone reading the chart should know what information is in the chart)
    • each bar labeled (if you have bars)
    • the x-axis correctly labeled and should be 0-100 if percentage or 0-1 if proportion (do not just use the default scale that Excel uses)
    • the y-axis correctly labeled
    • no legend (for a regular column chart) or a legend (if you have a stacked column chart)

>>

  1. Enter the numbers from your pivot table into an online chi square calculator. Take a screen shot of your results (1 pt)

>>

  1. Report the chi square value and p-value from your results: (http://www.socscistatistics.com/tests/chisquare/Default.aspx) (2 pts)

Chi square: >>

p-value >>

  1. Write 2-3 sentences to answer your research question: Select specific numbers from either the data table and / or the risk ratios to support your answer. Make sure to indicate whether there is a statistically significant relationship or not. Also make sure that you use complete, grammatically correct sentences, as if you were summarizing this information in a report to your boss. (3 pts)

>>

  1. Write a research question that can be answered using a correlation coefficient from data in the YRBS dataset. Then, use the data from the YRBS to answer your research question. Remember that a research question is phrased as a question and it is different than the survey questions. Also: You should come up with your own unique research question for this example (you should not have the same research question as a study partner).

Variable 2: >> Type: >>

  1. Use the data posted on Canvas (under course materials) to obtain the correlation coefficient to answer your research question. Provide the correlation coefficient here (1 pt) >>

  1. Write 2-3 sentences to answer your research question. Make sure to describe both the direction (positive, negative, or no relationship) and the size (none, small, moderate, or large) of your correlation. Make sure that you use complete, grammatically correct sentences, as if you were summarizing this information in a report to your boss. (2 pts)
