PRACTICE PROBLEMS FOR CHAPTER 5 These practice problems are due by Thursday (4/14/22). Problems turned in past this date will receive half credit. You must show your work to receive credit. You may do this with one other person from class and submit one set of answers for both of you. If you decide to work with another person make sure to write both of your names on the paper with your answers. 1) A person you are training is attempting to do a 220 N (50 1b.) dumbbell arm curl, which has a 3 m moment arm about his elbow joint. If the moment arm of his elbow flexor muscles at that same position is .02 m and they are generating 3200 N of force, can he curl the dumbbell? (2 points) 2) Later in the work out you are having the person from #1 doing leg flexion exercises by having them lay on a soft table and flex their leg with an ankle weight on their lower leg. You have them do an isometric contraction part way through the motion. The ankle weight is 75 N, it's moment arm about the knee joint is 25 cm (creating a counter-clockwise torque), and the moment arm of the hamstrings is 3 cm about the knee joint. Answer the following questions: a) How much torque is the ankle weight creating about the ankle joint in that position? b) How much force do the hamstring muscles need to develop to hold the ankle weight in that position? (Ignore the weight of the leg, 2 points). 3) You are completing a bench press but forgot to put on the collars. The 20 kg plate on the left end of the bar slides and stops at 5 cm from the left end of the bar. The 20 kg plate on the other end of the bar is at 40 cm from the right end of the bar. The bar is 20 kg and 220 cm long. Where is the center of gravity located on the bar including the plates? (2 points) 4) Matt's older sister Brooke is a center on a college basketball team and wants to show Matt how to do a real dunk. Since she is older and larger they put a sandbag on the back of the base of their basketball goal in the driveway so it will not tip over on her when she does the dunk and hangs on the rim. The sandbag added to the 70 kg base is 15 kg. Because of the sandbag the combined CG of the sandbag and base has shifted backwards so the CG is now 1.3m from the front edge of the base of support. The front of the rim is 1.Im from the front edge of the base of the basketball goal. Matt's sister exerts a force of 800N on the front of the rim by hanging on it. Answer the following questions: a) How much torque is produced around the front edge of the basketball base by Brooke handing on it? b) How much torque would be needed to tip the basketball goal? c) What is the largest vertical force that can be exerted on the front edge of the rim before the basketball goals starts to tip? d) Did the basketball goal tip over on Brooke? Why or why not? (4 points)
