National fishermen urged to sell their catches themselves KHOR FAKKAN | By Tahseen Shaghouri | 05/05/2002 | Print this page UAE national fishermen have been urged to sell their daily catch at the fish market themselves to control prices. The call comes from Sulaiman Al Kabouri, Director of the Khor Fakkan Fishermen's Association, in the wake of Asians increasing prices. He said: "It is not a new story. Asians still control the prices of fish at our fish market in Khor Fakkan and that is because national fishermen are not supervising sales." National fishermen sell the catch to Asians who then sell in the market at higher prices. "Asians sailors only care about more profit." Al Kabouri also asked the authorities to look into the problem and regulate sales to check manipulation in prices," Al Kabouri said. He blamed national fishermen for not selling the catch themselves and renting fishing licences and shops at the fish market to Asians who will, consequently, control prices. "A fisherman can rent a shop at the fish market for around Dh 2,000 per month, but he lets it out again to Asians for around Dh 7,000, in addition to another sum for the licence," said Al Kabouri. Hence, Asian tenants increase or even double the prices to cover expenses they have paid to national fishermen. "We ask the authorities to give our association the permission to supervise sales and determine prices," Al Kabouri suggested. Another solution is to give the trading licences to retired nationals so that they can regulate prices. "Responding to the calls made by President His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan concerning the emiratisation of the fishing profession, we stress the importance of a fast and an active solution to remove the manipulation in fish prices by Asians, and the importance of training fishermen and obligating them to take part in improving the profession of our ancestors," said Al Kabouri.
