Please help me respond to my fellow student's discussion question below:

According to Kotter (2012), "vision refers to a picture of the future with some implicit or explicit commentary on why people should strive to create that future." Vision is essential to facilitating successful organizational change for the following reasons that Kotter (2012) listed:

  • Vision plays a fundamental role in the change process. It guides the change and navigates the project team away from irrelevant projects, ensuring the resources are used sensibly and appropriately to support the transformation process.
  • Vision is a catalyst for significant changes and a powerful motivator. It inspires people to take action and instills in them the belief that their sacrifices will lead to long-term benefits.
  • Vision aligns and coordinates the individuals' actions so they can work independently. Thus, managers and employees can work efficiently without micromanaging.

For a successful change initiative, visions help leaders set "the future priorities" and communicate the leader's intrinsic beliefs and values to followers. Visionary leaders amplify the values that attract followers to an organization's change. (Berson et al., 2001). Similarly, a leader's vision guides the path toward successful change initiatives, informs the team, and instills a sense of clarity and direction. One of the visions that inspired successful change in our institution was when the Vice President of Academic Innovation and Strategy (VPAIS) revamped the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence (CTLE) with state-of-the-art facilities for Active Learning Studio. After the pandemic, one floor in our Technology Center building became unoccupied since I.T. personnel work remotely permanently. After securing the grant through the guidance of the VPIS, the vision successfully turned into an innovative change. The CTLE creatively and efficiently supports full-time and adjunct faculty through this vision, hiring faculty development coaches and elevating some staff's titles to managers for online and instructional technology. As described by Berson et al. (2001), strong visions correlate with organizational performance; they are inspiring, motivating, and energizing, and they help the team take on complex challenges with optimism.
