Experiment #23: Electrostatjcs - What is Charge? Purpose This lab looks at the idea of electric charge. Many of us confuse the name ofa concept with a real understanding of that concept. While we know that protons and electrons exist, put that knowledge aside for the duration of this lab. Instead, you will try to obtain a better understanding of the "property of charge" through your own observations. Equipment glass rods plastic rods 1 piece of wool or animal tur 1 piece of string or other rotation device 1 small piece from notebook paper .00.. Procedure 1 Tear ol'l' very small pieces of paper and put them on the bench. Assume the paper to be uncharged at a_l| times. 2 Charge one end of the plastic rod by rubbing it with the animal fur. Assume that the [or charges the rod. 3 Bring the charged end of the rod near the pieces of paper. Be careful not to touch the paper. 4 Write down your observations: (4} Try picking up the paper using the other end ofthe rod. Is the rod a conductor or insulator? Why? (4) Now charge one end of the glass rod. Bring the glass rod close to the bits of paper and record your observations: {5} Since the rod and paper both have mass, they are attracted to each other through the force of gravity. How do you know thata force other than gravity attracts the paper to the rod? i; 5 Since a new force must be responsible for this interaction let's call it the electric force. Since gravity is not attracting these ejects. they must have some other property other than mass. Let's call this new property "charge'. The two rods were charged but the paper was not. What can you conclude will happen when a charged object is brought near an uncharged object? {13} Do you think that the plastic and the glass rod have the same type ot charge? What evidence do you have to support your answer? (Don't let the strength of the interactions influence your answers} [13! Attach another rod (plastic or glass} to the rotating apparatus. You should have two like rods and one different rod. Charge one end of the rod on the rotating platform and charge the other 'like" rod. Be sure to pay attention to which ends are charged. With the rotating platform at rest, bring the charged ends near each other, but do not make contact. Record your observations: (12} Bring the system to a rest and set aside the 'like" rod. Charge the 'unlike' rod and recharge the rotating rod. With the rotating platform at rest, bring the charged ends near each other, but do no make contact. Record your observations: (12} In light of your recent observations, do you think that the plastic rod and the glass rod hold the same type of charge? Why? (12} Using this setup, it is possible to cause the rotating rod to spin in one direction, and later reverse the direction of spin without ever physically touching the rotating rod. Try to determine a procedure for doing this. You must use separate rods to start and reverse the rotation. Signal your instructor to demonstrate the procedure. Instructor's Signature : {12} Suppose you wish to determine if an unknown object has the same charge as the plastic rod, the glass rod, or no charge at all. Describe a detailed method using the materials of this experiment to nd ouL Be sure your method accounts for all three possibiliies. (1 3)
