Comparing a Real Spring to an Ideal Spring You have been asked to evaluate the design of an inexpensive device that could be built in underdeveloped regions for physical therapy or athletic training. The device uses springs to provide the force to help strengthen muscles. You know that for the ideal springs in physics books the force exerted by the spring is proportional to its stretch. You decide to test how accurate this relationship is for a real spring to determine how to calibrate the device. EQUIPMENT You have a spring. You also have a table clamp, metal rod, mass set, meter stick, and a balance. CAUTION: DO NOT STRETCH ANY SPRING PAST ITS ELASTIC LIMIT (ABOUT 40 CM) OR YOU WILL DAMAGE IT. Warm up 1. Draw two side-by-side pictures of a spring, one with with an object hanging on it and one without. In both cases assume that the object is stationary. Draw the extension of the spring from its equilibrium position on the pictures. For the picture with the object, draw all of the forces on the object and all of the forces on the spring. Draw a free-body diagram of the object that is hanging on the spring. Draw all of the forces on the object on a coordinate system, making a force diagram. Using your force diagram and your knowledge of object's motion, write down an equation relating the weight of the object to the spring force on it. Write a justication of your relationship. Write down whatever assumptions you are making. Write down the equation that gives the relationship between the force that the spring exerts on the object and the amount the spring stretched from its equilibrium position for an ideal spring. Make sure you designated the stretch of the spring in your picture. Using that equation, sketch a graph of the spring's stretch vs. the object's weight. Identify what you could call the stiffness of the spring on that graph. Prediction Describe how you can determine how closely a real spring's behavior is to an ideal springStep by Step Solution
