"Diversity in healthcare has measurable benefits for both healthcare professionals and the communities they serve. ... Reduced health disparities: Improved cultural competence and ethnic and racial diversity can help to alleviate healthcare disparities and improve healthcare outcomes in diverse patient populations." (Clements, 2021). However, there are still challenges that can arise throughout. Challenges can arise from diversity, autonomy, and bioethics. Each has a key part in the healthcare world.
Diversity can be understood if one would just be open and learn new things or take advantage of learning more things. Communication is the key when it comes to diversity. Without communication more issues are liable to come into play. Diversity is hard; especially when people make accusations about a person's character before they even know the person. Challenges in diversity come from people not willing to learn different languages, or different cultures, and it can even come from people not willing to except different economic classes or statuses. In order to eliminate the challenges in diversity, it is best that one follows the LEARN method. The LEARN method is taking the steps to Listen, Explain, Acknowledge, Recommend and Negotiate. This method is what can help with understanding, and understanding can eliminate the challenges of diversity.
A patient has the right to make their own healthcare decisions without a physician that is what autonomy is. The challenges that come with this can be many different challenges. They first start with whether it is autonomy or cultural autonomy. Cultural autonomy is when the family and community make the decision for the individual. This is the main challenge because the physician or healthcare provider is unsure as to why they are letting a community make the decision for the health of their wellbeing. Physicians want what is best for the patient in most So, when patients do not take their opinion or decision and rely on the community to make the decision for them, they kind of take it as a stab to their professionalism.
And lastly, bioethics is the study of how healthcare decisions are made. This can be a remarkably interesting topic. Bioethics issues can be anything from physician-patient relationship to sexuality and gender. Bioethics issues that are common today are individuals not identifying as their birth gender. This can be an issue because of the fact that not everyone agrees with the sex changes or being a different sex than what you were born.
