Introduction

"Frederick Taylor wrote that 'the best management is a true science, resting upon clearly defined laws, rules, and principles'" (Daft 2016). As management has evolved so has the way managers and employees communicate. There are several different way for the management to communicate with their employees, they just need to know which form to use.

Communication Strengths

"Being a good communicator starts with appreciating how complex communication is and understanding the key elements of the communication process" (Daft 2016). But to me to be a good manager the manager must be a good listener, be able to understand body language, say what should be said without using too many or too few of words; and also must be friendly, confident, show empathy, be open-minded, show respect even to those below you, give feedback and receive feedback without conflict and to know which form of communication is needed. Mr. Geary shows a handful of these strengths. When I was working for Mr. Geary he understood body language very well. If I was ever put in an uncomfortable or an uneasy situation, he would remove me and place me elsewhere. For example, I was working the concession stand one day through the summer and this customer was really drunk and yelling at me through the screen for his food taking to long. Mr. Geary came and noticed that my body language was not the usual perky, happy one. I was scared and worried. He immediately removed me and dealt with the drunk guy himself. Mr. Geary is friendly, understandable and respected all of his employees.

Even if an employee did something wrong he would communicate with them appropriately.

Communication Weaknesses

Although there is an abundance amount of strengths when it comes to communication there are several weaknesses that a manager can possess when it comes to communication. Mr. Geary's biggest weakness in communication within his workplace to his employees is his confidence. He is a very smart man, but he lacks confidence in the way he talks. He second guesses a lot of what he has said, and he often worries that he hurt someone's feelings by what has been said. Though the communications between Mr. Geary and his employees was on good basis, the communication between Mr. Geary and his bosses were not on good basis. There was a lack of communication on that aspect of his job. Whether people were not getting back to his emails, or they were to busy to give him a time slot in there day. The only time he would get the chance to speak with his bosses was during meetings that would last all day. This would keep him from his employees thus causing a strain on their communications.

Recommendations

One recommendation that I can give Mr. Geary to help him be a better communicator is to have confidence. When he is trying to get his bosses attention keep trying, send emails; multiple if necessary, make phone calls, always stay on top of what you are trying to communicate about. In my opinion communication is the key to any well ran business. I learned from watching my parents run their own print shop that in order to keep things going smoothly there has to be good communication, there has to be confidence and you have to be approachable.

Conclusion

In conclusion, "communication is the process by which information is exchanged and understood by two or more people, usually with the intent to influence or motivate behavior"

(Daft 2016). All managers need to be able to communicate, whether it be via email, phone call or social networking. A manager must know which form of communication is needed to get the information where it needs to go. Being able to communicate well is a great skill to have, it is versatile and used in every business.
