1. The Public Utilities Commission is interested, because of a rate setting case, in the relationship between the recorded high temperature in downtown Pittsburgh and the electrical peak load demand (in megawatts). A random sample of 20 days in July and August resulted in the following observations. Use the Utilities.csv file. (a) What are the Bo and B1 coefficients of a regression of peak load on high temperature (peak load is the dependent variable)? (b) What is the expected increase in peak load demand for a 3 degree increase in the high temperature? (c) Are there any values in this data-set that might be considered outliers? (d) Does ordinary least squares give more weight to outliers or values closer to the regression line? Would using the absolute instead of the squared distance change things? 2. The marketing manager at a concert venue is interested in estimating the demand function for concert t-shirts. He obtains the following data regarding the sales (in hundreds) of t-shirts at the various prices. Use the Concert.csv file. (a) What are the Bo and B1 coefficients of a regression of sales on price (sales is the dependent variable)? (b) What is the interpretation of the intercept term? Does it make sense in this case? (c) What is the 95% confidence interval for B1? (d) What is the 90% confidence interval for B1? 3. Consider the following data relating years education to salary (in thousands of dollars). Use the Education.csv file. (a) What is the equation of the regression line? (b) What is the R2 and how should we interpret it? (c) What is the standard error of the regression? How does it's interpretation differ from R2? (d) What is a variable that could be positively correlated with education and salary? 4. Greenfield Service Company's marketing director is interested in analyzing the relationship between her company's sales and the advertising dollars spent. In the course of her analysis, she selected a random sample of 20 weeks and recorded sales for each week and the amount spent on advertising. The file Greenfield.csv contains the data.
