Excel Graphing Techniques - Part I 63 | Page Sheet 2 In an experiment, a hollow glass container is filled with dry air and attached to a pressure gauge. The system is then sealed so that no air can escape. The glass container is placed into beakers of ice water, boiling water, and liquid water of various temperatures. The temperature of the water baths and the pressure exerted by the air in the container is reported below. Pressure, 202 276 248 262 250 210 230 kPa Temperature 0.0 100 58 82 20 12 44 "C 1. What is the independent and the dependent variable? 2. Plot the data in Excel. (Be sure to properly label the graph) 3. Add a trendline to your data and display the equation of the line on the graph Sheet 3 1. Plot the data from Table 1. 2. Make a second graph plotting 1/Gas Pressure vs Volume. 3. Add a trendline to the second graph and display the equation of the lineExcel - Graphing Techniques Part 1 Assignment Open Excel and do the following exercises on the sheets indicated. Sheet 1: The volumes of several metal cylinders having the same composition were measured using water displacement. The mass of the cylinders were also obtained. (See table below for data). Volume, mL 2.7 4.0 9.2 12.6 7.6 Mass, g 21.2 29.5 72.4 99.2 61.9 1. Plot the data in Excel. Which measurement should be the independent variable and which in the dependent variable? (Warning, be sure to plot the data correctly!! In other words, always make sure data is ordered correctly.) Be sure to properly label the axis and title your graph. 2. You need to find the density of the unknown metal. Density is defined as the mass per unit volume. In other words, since the volume is the independent variable and the mass if the dependent variable, you need to find the slope of the line the data creates. Excel has a very handy function to do that. It is called a Trendline. Select your graph and [right click] on a data point to bring up a secondary menu. Then select "Add Trendline." A menu will pop up and you will have several options for trendlines. The most typical used in the "Linear" trendline. Select "linear" and then also select "display equation on chart." This will give you the equation of the line in y=mx+b form. 3. What is the equation of the line? 4. What is the slope of the line? 5. What is the y-intercept of the line? 6. What is the density of the metal? 7. What is the mass of the cylinder if the volume was 6.3ml
