Load the data set "Covid Death and Vaccination Rates by State" into SPSS. For ease of visualization, in the variable view limit both numerical series to two decimal places.
1. Perform a correlation (Pearson's r) on the two numerical variables.
(a) Is the correlation positive or negative? What does your answer mean about the relationship between the two?
(b) Note the "significance" test reported in the SPSS output. Based on what you now know about such tests, say in words what this result means.
2. Perform a linear regression on these variables, selecting State as your case labels. In the "Plots" menu, select your dependent variable for the y axis and the *ZRESID for the x axis, which will enable us to examine the standardized residual plot.
(a) Which variable did you put on the y axis? Why?
(b) What is the coefficient on the x-axis variable? Say what this means in words, using the form "a change of ____ in _____ is associated with a change of _____ in _____". (The first and third blanks are units, the second and fourth are the variables.)
(c) What is the R 2 for your regression equation? What does this mean in words?
(d) What is the t statistic for the slope coefficient? Is this a "large" or small" ratio of effect size to estimated sampling variability?
(e) Now look at the standardized residual plot. Which two states have the largest negative gaps between predicted and actual values? Does Oregon come in above or below its predicted value?
