The same task was used for both prototypes and the time to complete the task was recorded for each participant. A total of 20 participants were induded in the study. A standard ABBA method was used for counterbalancing the order in which the prototypes were tested: Participant 1 used Prototype A, Participant 2 used Prototype B, Participant 3 used Prototype B, Participant 4 used Prototype A, and so on. There are therefore 10 time scores for each prototype, but these scores are intermixed in the Data tab. Performing the Exercise This exercise involves: [1] calculating means and standard errors of the means for each prototype, {2] using a t test to dEtErmine ifthe time data indicate that there is a significant diffErEmE bethEn Prototype A and Prototype B, and {3} creating a column chart to displayr the data. 1. Transfer data to the Analysis tab Because the data are somewhat unwieldy to manage when intennixed in a single column, the rst steo is to move the data to the Analysis tab and to separate the data for Prototype A and Prototype B. a. In the Analysis tab, enter "Prototype A" in cell El and enter "Prototype B\" in cell C1. b. Enter the function =DataIC2 in cell BI, which displays the score for Participant 1. c. Enter the corresponding functions in cells 33-311 to display the scores for the remaining participants who used Prototype A cl. Use a t test to determine the probability that the difference between the scores for Prototype A and Prototype B is due to \"chance.\" A t test is a common way to determine if there is a "statistically signicant\" difference between the scores for bird conditions. Excel can calculate t tests, but you need an Analysis Toolpak add-in that is provided with Excel. but needs to be installed. 3. Install the Analysis Toolpalr in Excel. With your Excel file open, click on the Ofce button [upper left cornerL then click on the Excel Options button at the lower n'ght of the Office menu. In the Excel Options window, click on Add-Ins on the left side. In the Add-Ins window, select I"Analysis Toolpak" from the list and click "OK\". After you complete these steps, you can click on the Data tab in Excel and you should see a Data Analysis button. b. In cell A16, enmr the text \"t test: p value="' to provide a label for the p value that is displayed in cell 315. The probability value faulting from a t test - typically repremed by p indicates the probability that these sets of Scora would occur simply due to chance. In general, for usability studies. it p is less than .05, then the difference is considered statistically significant. A p of .05 means that there is only a 5% chance [1 chance out of 20}that this difference would have Damned due to chante. It is therefore determined that it is very likely that the observed difference in times is due to the differences between the dign of Prototype A and the design of Prototype B. See Section 2.4.1 and the Excel Tip at the end of that section in "Measuring the U5er ExperienceI for more information about using a t test. 4-. Create a column chart to Show the means for the raw time data for Prototype A and Prototype B. 5. Add error bars to the chart to Show the standard errors of the means. The value of showing error bars for the standard errors of the means is that a general "rule of thumb" is that if the error bars do not overiap in this type of comparison of two conditions, then difference between these conditions is likely to be signicantly signicant. {As with other "rula of thumb", this isn't always true. so you still need to use something like a t test to check.) The steps for adding the error bars may be slightly different across different versions of Excel. The "Excel Tip" at the end of Section 2.3 in \"Measuring the User Experience\" provides instructions for adding error bars for an example with data similar to the data in this exercise. although this example uses 90% condence intervals instead of standard errors. You can follow this example and simply select your standard error values at the steps in the example where the values for the condence intenrals were selected.
