4. Comparison of the effect of an independent variable (with three or more groups) on a single continuous variable

a/ Explain why you chose the variables you selected relative to their levels of measurement. [5 points]

ANSWER: * The variable I chose to analyze for this question is Races - Independent Variable (IV), since it is a nominal scale with 3 groups (Black, White, and Hispanic), so it is appropriate for this question. Weight is the dependent variable (DV) because it is an example of ratio and continuous variable because it has an infinite number of potential values between points.

* Variables: Races (IV), Weight (DV)

b/ Explain why you chose the statistical procedure you used based on the assumptions for that procedure.

ANSWER: * I use One-way ANOVA procedure because it requires one independent variable which consists of three or more groups and groups are independent of each other, they are not related. The procedure also requires a dependent variable which is either interval or ratio therefore the variables I chose are appropriate for the One-way ANOVA test

c/ Show the results of your analytical procedure, from StatCrunch or other software

ANSWER:

* Analysis of Variance results: Responses: Weight Factors: Race/Ethnicity

Response statistics by factor

Race/Ethnicity n Mean Std. Dev. Std. Error
Black, not Hispanic 795 174.13333 46.560649 1.651336
Hispanic 123 166.81301 41.015061 3.6982035
White, not Hispanic 54 174.5 58.797622 8.0013429

ANOVA table

Source DF SS MS F-Stat P-value
Race/Ethnicity 2 5800.6862 2900.3431 1.3321037 0.2644
Error 969 2109770.1 2177.2653
Total 971 2115570.8

d/ Write a paragraph describing/interpreting the results of your statistical analysis (use a = .05). Your explanation should use the technical language in the course, but it should also show that you understand these terms. It should also include a non-statistical statement (plain English) as to what the results mean

ANSWER:

(Note)

Hypotheses should be more precisely written using symbols for population means.

* H0: There is no difference in the mean of weight for each race group.

* HA: There is difference in the mean of weight for each race group.

* Our F=1.33

* Our p=0.26 > 0.05

* F Critical (2, 969, 0.05) = 2.99

* Since F Calculated(1.33) < F Critical (2.99). Also, The P-value (0.26) calculated in Stat Crunch is greater than alpha (0.05) => We will retain the null hypothesis. Thus, the result is not statistically significant at the 0.05 level.

* In conclusion: There are no statistically significant differences in the mean of weight for each race group.
