Introduction Those of you who have tied an object to a string and whirled it in a horizontal circle above your head no doubt have recognized that you have to pull on the string and therefore on the object in a direction toward the center of the circle if you wish to have circular motion. This pull or forceis called a centripetal force (Fc). You may also have noticed that a more massive (m) item requires more effortin your swing. The length of the string (or radius, r, of the circle), and the speed (velocity, v) with which objectis traveling will also change. In this laboratory you will complete an investigation which will allow you to determine empirically what the relationship is between Fc, m, r, and v for uniform motion in a circle. Whenever an object moves in a circular path, the object is accelerating because the velocity is constantly changing direction. All accelerations are caused by the net force acting on an object. Inthe case of an object moving in a circular path, the net forceis a special force called the centripetal force (not centrifugal!). Centripetal is Latin for "center seeking.\" So a centripetal forceis a center seeking force which means that the force is always directed toward the center of the circle. Without this force, an object will simply continue moving in straight line motion. Purpose: In this activity you will be using investigating the factors that affect the force needed to hold an object in circular motion. You will be changing the mass of the object movingin a circle, the speed of the object movingin a circle and the radius of the circle. Leave the radius at 1.5 meters for this part of the lab don't change the speed but leave it at the random speed that was generated when you opened the program. 3. Set the mass at 1.5 kg and hit the start button. You do not need to time anything, but instead, take a look at the reading on the force probe and make a good estimate of the force holding the disk in circular motion. 4. Make a data table that will hold 3 different masses and the force that is required to hold them in this circle at this speed. 5. After you collect all your data, make a graph with your independent variable on the x-axis and the dependent variable on the y-axis. 6. Give a quick conclusion about how the mass affects the force.
