  1. Steven (age 49) and Kristin Anderson (age 48) are married and live in Dallas, TX. The

Andersons have three children: Austin (age 19), Stephanie (age 8), and Cassidy (age 5).

Stephanie and Cassidy live at home and their parents provide for all of their needs. Austin

does not live at home but receives more than half of his support from her parents. Austin

earned $15,000 as a professional bull rider this year while also attending college. The

Andersons provided the following information:

Stevens social security number is 987-65-4321

Kristins social security number is 999-88-7777

Austins social security number is 123-45-6789 (earns gross income of $15,000)

Cassidys social security number is 333-44-5555 (earns gross income of $0)

The Andersons current mailing address is 94 Rocky Rd, Dallas, TX 75201

2. Kristin plays guitar for the Boston Pops. She received a W-2 from the Boston Pops

reporting the following information:

1. Wages: $81,575

2. Federal Income Tax Withheld: $15,851

3. Social Security Wages: $88,000

4. Social Security Tax Withheld: $5,270

5. Medicare Wages: $88,000

6. Medicare Tax Withheld: $1,233

17. State Tax Withheld: $5,442

Kristin contributed $6,425 to her employers traditional 401(k).

3. Steven is a chef. For the first two months of the year, he was employed part-time by Cold

Stone Creamery, inventing new ice cream flavors (Texas Rattlesnake, anyone?).

Steven received a W-2 from Cold Stone with the following information:

1. Wages: $17,950

2. Federal Income Tax Withheld: $2,790

3. Social Security Wages: $17,950

4. Social Security Tax Withheld: $958

5. Medicare Wages: $17,950

3

6. Medicare Tax Withheld: $224

17. State Tax Withheld: $979

The W-2 also notes that Steven is not eligible for a 401(k) or retirement plan at Cold

Stone.

4. Steven resigned from his position with Cold Stone to devote all his time to his own

restaurant. He operates his restaurant, The Bottom Line (TBL, for short), as a sole

proprietorship (EIN 20-7777777). He started his solo business on June 1, 2021. The

restaurant is located at 2000 Hearst St, Dallas, TX 75201. TBL was required to, and did,

file Forms 1099 for payments made to contractors.

Steven reported the following information for the business activities of TBL (he uses the

cash method of accounting):

Revenues:

Cash receipts 265,000

Total revenue 265,000

Expenses:

Advertising 19,300

General business insurance 8,450

Store rent 11,500

Equipment leases kitchen equipment 3,211

Business meals with customers 256

5. TBL purchased and placed in service the following fixed assets during the year:

Item Date Purchased Amount

POS Computers & Printers June 1 $3,955

Furniture & Fixtures October 18 $12,785

TBL does not elect out of bonus depreciation and wants to take Section 179 expensing in

a way that maximizes the current year depreciation (including 179 expense).

Also, on April 17, 2022 Steven purchased and placed in service a new laptop for TBL at

a cost of $2,750. On the same day, he sold his old laptop for $900. It was originally

purchased for $2,550 on June 1, 2021 (it was the only asset he purchased in 2021; he did

not take 179 or bonus depreciation on the old laptop). These assets are used entirely in

Stevens business (there is no personal use). Assume none of the property is listed

property. Steven capitalizes these assets for financial accounting purposes. TBL does not

have an audited financial statement.
