I think the first thing that I found surprising but interesting was right in the beginning. I never thought about the aftermath of Alexander the Great, but to think that his accomplishments dissipated shortly after he died because of a lack of management, infrastructure or administrative structures is a fascinating way to look at things, let alone how the romans conquered the Greeks. All of it from the lens and perspective of history is fascinating. Now, that these systems have been in use for so long, it is odd to think of modern society without them, which gives a view of sociological evolution through the centuries, as stated in the text ". The Greeks simply lacked the knack-lacked the doctrine-for large-scale administrative structures." The second point I would touch on is also through the lens of viewing history. In the managerialism section of the chapter, it talks about how James Burnham predicted our modern society of governing class being CEO's, or rather, the professional managers. This is something that I've not only studied, but is championed in my business classes here at UNO, where venture capitalism is king, and original owners give way to professional managers in the selling of a company. It also goes on to refer to Milovan Djilas's work The New Class, that well predicts modern Russia and their dealing in communis,. Specifically, "people, especially those near the top, were the only ones in the communist states to have any power, They used the repressive forces of the state, especially the secret police, to ensure total obedience. This enabled them to enjoy a standard of living vastly higher than that of ordinary members of society." And we see this playing out since then, and even now. Lastly, I want to touch on it's coverage in the Entrepreneurship section, as that is my concentration. I find it interesting that they address it as an attitude for work, rather than the common term of being a business owner. The section goes on to say that it is a matter of employees having this attitude and a vision for change, because without it a business will die. BUT THEN it goes on to really let out some true knowledge in one of the best bit's I've seen in the text. It talks about a few various fads in management style that when taken to the extreme as the only path, they eventually fail. Specifically, it states that "Be aware that the true believers of any philosophic system or ideology are often headed for a fall.", and then wisely states that you can't adhere to anyone style, implying that you have to mimic life's style itself, which is a mix of many things and always changing. That's true in management as well as politics and almost anything else in life
