Grocery Bag Project Report Guide (15 points) Scope of your report Your instructor collected several types of data for this project. The data included: customer gender, means of carrying groceries out of the store, grocery store where purchases were made, and type of grocery bag used. You are not required to use all of this information. Choose a question you want to explore based on the data. Analyze the appropriate data from the data set. Write a brief report which contains the information listed below. Experimental Design Step 1: Decide what question you want to answer. I collected enough data to allow you answer several possible questions. Some possible questions are: Do customers at different grocery stores use the same type of bags? Does the way a customer carries groceries from the store influence the type of bag they use? Do men make different grocery bag choices than women? Do customers at smaller stores make different bag choices than customers at larger stores? Based on your question, propose an appropriate hypothesis. Step 2: Identify your variables. My dependent variable was the type of grocery bag used. I collected data for several independent variable choices. These were: type of grocery store: I collected data from three local grocery stores (the names used here are fictitious). MegaFoods is a multi-state chain. Kramer's is a multi-state chain. MegaFoods and Kramer's are comparable in size and range of items offered. Local's Market is a local, independent store. It is smaller than the other two stores. Also, Local's Market gives you 5 cents for every reusable bag you use. method of carrying groceries out of the store: Customers were scored as carrying their bags out by hand or in a grocery cart. Initially, this was going to be used as a stand-in for quantity of groceries purchased. However, there were customers who brought out a single grocery bag in a cart and others who had many bags heaped to overflowing in the cart. customer gender: Customers were scored as male or female. If there was more than one person in the group, the person pushing the cart was chosen as the customer. Now that you have more detailed information about the data collected, you may wish to revisit your question and hypothesis.] My experimental design included a number of controlled variables. All data were collected on the same day and within a two-hour window. It took about 25 minutes to observe 50 customers exiting each store. I collected data while sitting in my car (thus I did not interact with customers) and watching the main door of the store. If I could not clearly see the type of bag used, I did not include the customer in my count. To be separate customers, the individuals had to go to separate vehicles. Once you choose an independent variable, the other variables will become controlled variables. Step 3: Plan your observations. A description of my observational methods is included with the discussion of variables. Step 4: Make your observations and collect your data. I had a score sheet for collecting the data. There was one score sheet per store. For each customer, I recorded: type of bag used, gender, and whether they had a cart or were carrying the bags byhand. I counted the first 50 customers at each store for whom I could clearly record each piece of data. Step 5: Analyze your data and draw conclusions. My raw data is provided in the Excel spreadsheet: Grocery_Bag_Data_Sp21.xIs. Use the types of data you need to answer your question. The data are arranged by store (because that it the way I collected it). If your question is unrelated to store type, you can combine data from stores. For example, if your question was, "Are women more likely to carry their grocery bags in a cart than by hand?", you could combine the data from all three stores to have a sample of 150 customers. Make a table of your analyzed data. Step 6: Write a brief report of your findings. Write a brief report containing the elements described below. The report should not be long or complicated. It will probably be a page or less. Your Grocery Bag Project Report should contain the following elements. Question. State the question you wish to explore. This might be the same question from your experimental design, but it does not need to be. Hypothesis. Based on the question you wish to explore, write a reasonable hypothesis. . Explanation of the data used. State the types of data you used to answer your question and how you used the data. . Table of your analyzed data. Construct a table containing the results of your data analysis. This table should have a title, contain labeled rows and columns, and be computer-generated. Statement of results. Write a textual statement describing your results. . Conclusion. Based on the results, what can you conclude? Please state whether your hypothesis was supported or refuted.
