1 CM: Construction Materials, Section 01 Spring 2016 Research Paper Instructions and Rubric Topic Each student shall write a research paper pertaining to a subject involving Construction Materials. Suggested general topics include: A comparison of specific characteristics/applications of two materials Sustainable applications for specific materials The use of alternative or innovative components for materials or applications Methods to improve a specific material's engineering properties Sources and characteristics of locally produced materials or materials from another specific region. Format and requirements The research paper shall be in American Psychological Association, (APA) format and comply with the APA style guide. The paper shall include a proper bibliography. The paper shall be no longer than ten pages and no shorter than four pages, excluding title page and appendixes. Illustrations shall have captions (title and source whenever using works by others). The paper shall have the following sections and be structured in the following manner: Research Question, Statement of the Problem, or Purpose of the Study This section shall discuss the concepts of the subject issue that the paper was specifically written to explore, research, or define. There would be no point in writing the paper if there was not some question to be answered. State the question and discuss it. Review of Literature The review of literature shall serve as the introduction and a discussion of the concept to be researched. It shall bring the reader up to date on the substance of the concept being researched and can include some history and a general discussion of the subject. This discussion shall be validated by citations from three to ten references. Research This section shall discuss the findings that the writer encounters in his or her research of the question to be answered. These findings shall be supported by citations from three to five references and shall discuss at length the findings that support the conclusions that will be drawn in the following section. Conclusion What conclusions has the writer drawn as a result of the research cited in response to the research question? 2 Schedule and Deadlines Submit proposed topic per Tentative Course Activities Schedule. -Submit via the appropriate D2L dropbox a document in PDF format that includes the following: Proposed topic or title Reason for the topic List of at least three references found in initial research that provide sufficient information to support the continued research. Draft paper due per Tentative Course Activities Schedule. Submit draft paper in PDF format in the appropriate D2L discussion area. Peer review per Tentative Course Activities Schedule. Each class member will be assigned to review papers written by three of their fellow students and post comments in the D2L discussion area. Peer reviews will address both of the following: o Readability: do not edit the paper, but make general comments as to spelling, grammar and readability o Questions: provide thoughts on areas that leave the reader with questions or that could be investigated or addressed further. Final paper due in PDF format in D2L drop box per Tentative Course Activities Schedule.
