Assignment Rationale

It is critical that the General Manager /Administrator has the necessary insight, knowledge, and skills to respond and serve the community they manage effectively. This is important for those working with a senior population facing numerous personal struggles and health barriers and adapting to living in a retirement community. We aim to provide them with a meaningful lifestyle and exceptional quality of life.

Purpose of Assignment:

As well as develop some confidence in managing effectively and problem-solving to address any issues related to care, food services and other areas of operation of the home.

Assignment Outline

Modules # 10,11, 12

Review the scenario, assess the situation and ask yourself what may need to be done to address the scenario. You will develop and provide a detailed plan on how specific steps or courses of action would need to be taken to address the situation.

In some cases, you will manage a facility where the frontline employees are unionized. A collective agreement would establish clear guidelines related to employee relations. Some facilities are not unionized. They have proactively established an employee/management agreement for these homes to help navigate various areas related to employee relations. This type of agreement has been warmly received by both employees and management as it helps ensure fair practices within the home and provides clear guidelines related to employee relations. It also provides a sound legal base if an employee challenges any practices.

The home you are currently managing has no agreement, and you are finding it challenging to navigate some employee issues, as no set practices have been followed in the past. It also appears that some of the practices do not adhere to the employment standards act.

When speaking to the Employee Relations Representative at the corporate office, it is suggested that you formulate a plan to establish an employee management agreement. They have asked that you develop a plan detailing frequently causing issues.

Some of the issues identified include Scheduling- number of shifts worked within a pay period/timeline of posting a schedule / unauthorized overtime and refusal to pay overtime / no formal structure related to vacation requests and payment for stat holidays - / change of shifts - no notice is being given, and people are not showing up for shifts as they think someone else agreed to cover it/ awarding of job postings/ no sick time payment /

To assist you when developing your plan, reference the Employee's standards act,Labour act.

You may include other areas you may have experienced in your workplace or situations observed around employee relations.
