Please provide a brief synopsis of the possible system's cost estimation and WBS approach as well as how you might relate these system development elements to your system's knowledge areas, stakeholders, and resource needs that you identified in the project below. Thanks!
As said in the previous post, the Systems Engineering Project (SEP) I'm working on aims to design an Aeronautical Satellite Communications (AeroSatCom) system to improve aeronautical systems. The SEP is divided intofour segmentsto choose from,Space segment, ground setup segment, airborne segment, andnetwork protocols and services, but for the purpose of this project, I will be focusing on the Space Segment. TheSpace segmentfocuses on designing a system of Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) and Medium-Earth Orbit (MEO) satellites, strategically placed ground setups, and operations support systems (OSS). These satellites will be designed to avoid interference and attenuation caused by cluttered areas or regions with high levels of attenuation, such as large water bodies and polar regions (Xin, 2019).
This week's tasks involve identifying stakeholders, considering the system lifecycle, analyzing resources, and identifying critical knowledge areas.
Section3 - Stakeholder Identification and Relationships:The stakeholders in this project would include the aeronautical industry (airlines, pilots, air traffic controllers), satellite manufacturers, ground setup operators, and regulatory bodies. The relationships between these stakeholders are crucial as they all contribute to the successful operation of the AeroSatCom system. For instance, airlines and pilots are the end-users of the system, while satellite manufacturers and ground setup operators are responsible for the design, development, and maintenance of the system. Regulatory bodies ensure the system adheres to safety and operational standards (Azzarelli, 2020).
Section7 - System Lifecycle:The AeroSatCom system would fit within a design and development system lifecycle that begins with the identification of the need for improved aeronautical communication systems. Given the complexity and long-term nature of satellite projects, a waterfall process might be suitable, with distinct phases for requirements gathering, system design, implementation, verification, and maintenance. However, an Agile process could be incorporated within each phase for iterative development and continuous improvement.
Section8 - Project Resource Analysis:From a high-level perspective, the project would require substantial resources. The schedule would need to account for the long lead times associated with satellite design, manufacturing, and launch. The budget would need to cover these activities, as well as ground setup construction and operations support systems (OSS) development. Funding could come from stakeholders or through government grants. Technological support would be crucial, particularly expertise in satellite communications and aeronautical systems. Personnel with a range of skills, including systems engineering, satellite technology, and aeronautical operations, would be needed.
Section9 - Identification and Discussion of Critical Knowledge Areas:Critical areas of knowledge for the AeroSatCom system's success would include understanding of satellite communication technology, particularly Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) and Medium-Earth Orbit (MEO) satellites, and their deployment strategies. Knowledge of signal propagation characteristics, such as frequency and power, is also crucial. Additionally, understanding the types of interference experienced in aeronautical communications and how to counter them would be vital (Zhang, 2021).
