"I'd been 40 years in the traditional business world, where we were told that creating shareholder value is what we do,"* Prophet explains. "We're learning so much about what equality means to our employees and how important it is to use data to help executives, inside and outside of the company, that business has an essential role to play in shaping society."*

The data Prophet is talking about come from Salesforce's own research effortsefforts that seek to illustrate the importance of its core values. For example, its "Special Report on The Impact of Equality and Values Driven Business" surveyed 1,514 full-time professional, managerial, and administrative employees at other companiesa sample that included, but was not limited to, Salesforce customers. The data provided a snapshot of employees' views on equality. For example, although 51 percent of employees believe their company provides equal opportunity for all employees, only 36 percent believe their company fosters an inclusive culture, with only 25 percent believing their company cares about closing the gender pay gap.

Such results illustrate the opportunity that companies like Salesforce possess if they can foster equality. Salesforce's study also illustrates the potential gains that could come from fostering that value. In addition to the survey questions reviewed above, employees were asked whether they were proud to work for their company and whether they were empowered to perform their best work for their company. In terms of the latter, employees who were proud to work for their company were 2.4 times more likely to believe it fosters an inclusive culture and 2.2 times more likely to believe it cares about closing the gender pay gap. In terms of the former, employees who felt empowered by their company to do their best work were 3.2 times more likely to believe it fosters an inclusive culture, and 2.6 times more likely to believe it cares about closing the gender pay gap. Prophet believes these sorts of data are key to getting managers to care about such values as much as Salesforce does. "If you show them dismal diversity numbers over timecurrent staff, hires, promotions and attrition rates, etc.most people will respond,"* he notes. "Ask them questions about the data. 'Does this company look like America to you? Are you proud of this?'"*
