Technology has allowed things for companies that no one thought possible even just 20 years ago. But with this great opportunity and advantage comes many challenges. Not many people realize how wide spread the Coast Guard is and how many different countries we work with and are stationed. One problem with operating relying on technology and being so widespread is the time differences, trying to schedule meetings and phone calls can get to be quite difficult. The other issue with the distance is connectivity, sometimes in places you will barely get service or none at all. Which when your organization relies on technology for meetings, parts requisition, administrative paperwork, and other important things can create quite the stressful situation. Another barrier with technology and organizational behavior is the cultural differences between the Coast Guard and the countries that we are trying to work with. Such as language barriers, and words and phrases that are used, some that are possible offensive to either group. When using technology in most mediums the personal touch, emotion, voice inflection and tone is lost. Leaving the receiver to interpret what was meant. Other challenges that I had to deal with was the operational differences, how the Coast Guard performed certain exercises and evolutions. It differed from the operational standards I was used too, and took a lot of planning and talking through the operations before it was actually executed. But in the end we learned a lot from on another, and it was beneficial to both groups.
