I have never had a gig job but I do understand the reason why folks would work for companies like these. I live in the Bahamas where there aren't that many options for gig jobs like these but I know for certain if there was I believe I would work when I have the free time to make some extra money. I know I would enjoy the flexibility as well as meeting new people. I believe that the freedom should be for both the driver and the company. The company should be free to operate the way they see fit and the driver should be free to work the way they want to. I believe there should some from of contract in place as to the rate of pay for each ride or fees associated with a business agreement between company and driver.
