The taxi union decides on the appropriate fare for each of the distances that the taxi travel. The fare for Bryan's route is R10,00 and he travels 4 km. the taxi union calculates the running cost of a taxi to be R1.75/km. This includes petrol., insurance and maintenance, where 70% of the running cost is for petrol. Petrol was previously sold at around R6,00. However, the taxi union also has rule that the taxi fare must stay fixed for at least a year regardless of any changes in the price of petrol. 1.
